But there are no details yet if the structure will look anything like it has in the past. The regular season for all winter sports will run from Monday, Dec. There have been three prongs to the individual post-season over a three-week span from mid to late February to the first weekend in March — the one-day 32 district tournaments, the three-day eight region tournaments and the three-day individual championships at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City. There seems to be no way the traditional 11 days of post-season wrestling can be crammed into this day period. Several things are going to have to give here, but what does give is not known right now. For starters, it would appear whether the Individual Championships, if they even happen, will be in Atlantic City, is questionable. We have not spent much time on the winter sports yet. Reporters, broadcasters and photographers with year-long NJSIAA credentials were permitted, along with players, coaches and essential school personnel. The public-school girls finals were set for Toms River on Saturday. As late as Thursday evening, first-year coach Rick Brunson questioned why games were still being played. Augustine coach Paul Rodio, the second winningest coach in state history, also felt the rest of the tournament should have been stopped prior to Thursday. My gut tells me we probably shouldn't play. Roselle Catholic, No. Our hope was the NJSIAA would allow one more game to be played with no fans to give these teams a chance to win a championship, but they were unable to do that and we understand. Leonia has become the latest New Jersey school district to reinstate fall sports for the season. The Board of Education reversed its initial decision Monday evening by a vote. This announcement comes nearly a month after superintendent Edward Bertolini stated in a letter that the district would not be competing in fall sports this year. The guidelines are outlined in a page document which include, but is not limited to, locker rooms being unavailable for practices or games, temperature checks and NJSIAA questionnaires prior to a practice or game, masks for transportation provided by the school district and players bringing their own individually labeled water bottles. The document also outlined sport-specific guidelines. For the football team, along with its co-op in Palisades Park, all players and coaches must wear masks at all times and all helmets must include either a visor or eye shield and a spit shield. Currently Palisades Park does not require athletes to wear both mask and face shield; according to the guidelines, however, no Leonia football player will be permitted to compete unless all members of that team wear the required protective gear. Palisades park athletic director Joe Spafford confirmed that his players participating in the co-op will do whatever they can to ensure they have a season. Boys and girls soccer players are required to wear masks at all times. Girls tennis players must wear masks at team meetings and if they are competing in a doubles match. The NJIC cross country championship has also made strides to ensure safety among its competitors and officials. For the starting line, individual schools will stay together and ensure that they are not alongside others for over a minute period. Leonia becomes the fifth school district in reversing its decision to cancel the fall season, joining Trenton, Teaneck, Manchester Regional and New Egypt. The number of schools that will currently not participate in fall sports this season is now down to eight. Our journalism needs your support. Please subscribe today to NJ. Like NJ.
